On July 4, Hu Fala, Director of the Student Affairs Office; Xiao Yuxia, Deputy Director of the Party and Administration Office; and Yang Ning, Teaching Secretary, led representatives of students from the Self-Improvement Class and the Hongyi Class to the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) for an exchange activity. Associate Professor Wang Yinkun and Captain He Hao from NUDT attended the meeting. Student representatives from NUDT’s Mathematics Strengthening Class and the Qian Xuesen Innovation and Extension Class also participated. The discussion focused on the topic of “Cultivating Top Talents.”

During the student sharing session, Liu Kaiyuan from our college shared his academic journey and valuable experiences in the Self-Improvement Class. He introduced the college’s diverse academic activities, such as mathematics seminars, professor tea talks, and faculty luncheons, which provide platforms for in-depth discussions on mathematical problems and enhance mentorship between professors and students. Huang Xingjie from NUDT introduced the training approach of the Fundamental Science Program, which provides comprehensive support from academic learning to research, and from daily life to career planning, enabling students to explore multiple development paths. Sun Jiayi from NUDT elaborated on the selection process, training objectives, and growth path of the Qian Xuesen Innovation and Extension Class, highlighting its daily management and the integration of undergraduate and postgraduate training. She emphasized how multidisciplinary exchange and guided research projects have built a strong foundation for students’ achievements in competitions and scientific research.
In the open discussion session, participants engaged enthusiastically and cordially, exchanging ideas on top-student training programs, selection mechanisms for elite classes, teaching characteristics, student management, enhancement of research and innovation capabilities, and the development of learning-oriented student organizations.
During the visit, faculty and students toured the study and living areas of NUDT’s Fundamental Science Program and Qian Xuesen Class. From the neatly folded “tofu-block” military bedding to the honor walls adorned with award certificates, and from rigorous academic training to impressive accomplishments in research and innovation, they gained a vivid understanding of the deep integration between the military’s “iron discipline” and a strong sense of “academic responsibility.”

Faculty and students also visited the NUDT History Museum, where they learned about the school’s glorious past and the indomitable spirit of its predecessors. Through exhibits showcasing the university’s milestone achievements and historical progress, they developed a deeper appreciation of the mission and responsibility of strengthening the military and serving the nation, which further fueled their passion for contributing to national development.

In addition, the group visited the former site of the First Normal School and Yuelu Academy, where they experienced the essence of personal growth through cultural immersion. Within the thousand-year-old academic tradition, they reflected on the unity between learning and personal virtue, and through exploring the red stories of great figures pursuing education, they deepened their understanding of patriotic devotion.
This study exchange not only broadened the students’ horizons but also promoted mutual understanding and collaboration between the two institutions in mathematics education and talent cultivation. Together, they aim to nurture more outstanding young scholars, injecting stronger youthful energy into the mission of building a nation strong in science and technology.
