President of Paris Cité University Visits the School of Mathematics and Statistics at Wuhan University

On April 9, a delegation of eight members led by Professor Édouard Kaminski, President of Paris Cité University, visited Wuhan University and attended a meeting with faculty and students of the Sino-French Elite Mathematics Program. Professor Fan Huijun, Dean of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at Wuhan University, met with the guests. He was accompanied by Professor Ma Xiaonan, Secretary-General of the French Teaching Committee of the Sino-French Program, Professor Ma Xinan, Chinese director of the Sino-French Mathematics Talent Program at the University of Science and Technology of China, as well as Professor Miao Shuang, Associate Dean of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, and Professor Liao Lingmin, Foreign Affairs Officer. Staff from the School’s Undergraduate Teaching Office and all students of the Sino-French Elite Mathematics Program also attended the meeting, which was chaired by Dean Fan Huijun.

At the beginning of the meeting, Fan Huijun extended a warm welcome to President Édouard Kaminski and his delegation on behalf of the School. He noted that educational and cultural exchanges between China and France have a long history, and that Wuhan University and the French mathematical community have established close and fruitful cooperation in cultivating outstanding talents. Together, they have nurtured a number of outstanding individuals who enjoy international recognition in the field of mathematics. He emphasized that this faculty–student meeting marks a new stage in bilateral cooperation in cultivating mathematical elites, fully demonstrating the strategic vision of both countries’ universities in fostering talents with a global perspective and international competitiveness. He expressed the hope that the Sino-French Elite Mathematics Program would further strengthen educational collaboration between China and France, promote academic exchange and mutual learning, and contribute to the advancement of humanity.

Professor Miao Shuang gave a detailed overview of the founding background of the Sino-French Elite Mathematics Program, its admission and selection mechanism, training scheme design, and future overseas study plans. He expressed sincere gratitude to the French experts for their long-term support of the program. He pointed out that under the grand national strategy of innovation-driven development, continuous progress and innovation in teaching and research are of great importance. He added that the School will continue to promote in-depth cooperation between China and France in mathematics education, with the goal of cultivating more talents with a global vision and contributing to the international development of the discipline.

Student representatives Wu Zhuoheng and Mei Yuxuan each gave vivid and detailed presentations about their daily academic experiences in the program. They expressed pride in being part of the Sino-French Elite Mathematics Program and vowed to work diligently to become top-notch talents with international competitiveness in the field of mathematics.

In his remarks, President Édouard Kaminski emphasized Paris Cité University’s strong commitment to the development of fundamental mathematics. He noted that the Sino-French Elite Mathematics Program stands as a model of both talent cultivation and international cooperation, perfectly aligned with the strategic goals of high-level mathematical education. He expressed his hope to further strengthen collaboration between the two universities in mathematics, jointly advancing international exchange, talent development, and scientific research, adding that he firmly believes the program will continue to produce exceptional mathematicians who will lead their generation.

During the subsequent discussion session, faculty and students from both sides engaged in in-depth exchanges on topics such as study plans, further academic development, specialized seminars, and scientific research. Active interactions and lively discussions ensued.

During the meeting, Wuhan University, Paris Cité University, and the University of Science and Technology of China held in-depth discussions on the operations of the Sino-French Joint Research Center for Mathematics, clarifying future directions and key areas of cooperation. All three parties agreed to continue strengthening exchanges and collaboration, with a joint commitment to cultivating mathematical talents with international outlooks and innovative capabilities, and to making greater contributions to the promotion of Sino-French communication and development in the field of mathematics.
