After four intense quarters, the School of Mathematics and Statistics men's basketball team defeated the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture 39-36, clinching third place in the men's division of the 2025 “Teng Fei Cup” Basketball Tournament. This victory marks the best performance in the history of our school's men's basketball team in this competition.
From the opening tip, the Mathematics Department men's basketball team faced a daunting challenge as key players Shang Enlong and Tian Jintao were sidelined due to injuries, significantly weakening the squad's lineup. Yet against the formidable Civil Engineering and Architecture team, the Mathematics squad showed no signs of retreat. With unwavering determination and high competitive spirit, they demonstrated exceptional skill and tenacious fighting spirit. The opposing team scored four consecutive points to start the first quarter, prompting the Mathematics team to call a quick timeout. After regrouping, Lin Zhicheng drove forcefully to the basket, grabbed an offensive rebound, and scored on a putback. Li Zhongjian then hit a layup with a Euro step and assisted Kuang Junhao, tying the score at 6-6. Lin Zhicheng, Kuang Junhao, and Li Zhongjian continued to attack the paint, and the first quarter ended in a 9-9 deadlock. In the second quarter, Guo Zhezhen opened with a floater. The Math Department team tightened their defense, with Guo Zhezhen drawing a foul while crashing the boards. Xu Weizhao then stole the ball, scored, and converted the free throw. Guo Zhezhen also delivered a clever pass to Qi Ji for a layup. Just before halftime, Guo Zhezhen made a free throw, tying the game again at 17-17.
In the second half, the Civil Engineering team seized opportunities to hit three-pointers and widen the gap, leading by as many as five points. At a critical moment, Lin Zhicheng and Li Zhongjian each sank a floater and a jumper respectively, ending the third quarter with the Mathematics team trailing just 24-26. In the final quarter, Li Zhongjian tied the game with a mid-range jumper off the dribble, while Guo Zhezhen took the lead with a difficult layup. The Math Department team maintained solid defense while Li Zhongjian scored consecutively on offense. Lin Zhicheng added a low-post floater, sparking a 10-0 run that pushed the score to 36-27. Though the Civil Engineering team responded with three straight points, Xu Weizhao secured the victory with an offensive rebound putback.
